History
Gembira Loka Zoo
At the time of the transfer of the state capital of Yogyakarta back to Jakarta in 1949 after the completion of World War II, again sparked an idea to give a memento to the people of Yogyakarta entertainment in the form of a central government, led by Januismadi and Hadi, SH. That idea got a warm welcome from the people of Yogyakarta, but its realization is still not perceived untill in 1953, with the establishment of the Foundation Gembira Loka Foundation (corresponding deed RM Wiranto. number 11 dated 10 September 1953) is presided over by Sri Paduka KGPAA Paku Alam VIII, the development of new Kebun Rojo can actually be realized.
A few years later, in 1959, KGPAA Paku Alam VIII appointed Tirtowinoto to continue development Gembira Loka Zoo. Tirtowinoto chosen because it was perceived have a love of nature and interest in the development of Gembira Loka Zoo. Apparently Tirtowinoto no small contribution, both in terms of ideas and material, proven to bring progress to Gembira Loka Zoo. Peak in 1978, when a collection of animals owned more complete, so that visitors are able to 1.5 million people.

Vision & Mission
VISION
To conserve plants and animals according to their habitats so as to serve the nature and human life.
MISSION
1. To be a place of development and conservation
for various kinds of plants.
2. To provide the green lungs of the city and water
reserves in the city of Yogyakarta.
3. To be a conservation establishment responsible
for animal well-being by nurturing them in accordance to their habitats.
4. To breed plants as well as placing the animals
in captivity by keeping their genetic purity and their diversities.
5. To be the animal research centre which is able
to provide information about its variety, habitat, feed, way of reproduction
and animal treatment for the sake of animal preservation.
6. To facilitate education that is competent in
providing information about animals so as to increase the knowledge of the
benefits in animal preservation in a conservation establishment.
7. To bring the society’s attention towards loving
and conserving plants and animals in order to keep them from extinction.
8. To provide an eco-friendly recreation place for
experiencing the benefits of having a balanced ecosystem.
9. To create a recreation place that is creative,
fun and educative.
10. To hold a promotion in order to introduce,
increase and maintain the visits.

Foundation
Gembira Loka Zoo
The purpose and objectives as stated in the deed of
establishment are to hold a zoo and a healthy recreational place for the
society as well as to be helpful in sharing knowledge and education. GLZoo
possesses the vision of conserving plants and animals in accordance to their
habitats so that it becomes beneficial for the nature and human life.
Its missions are to breed and to conserve plants, maintaining
the animal well-being by nurturing them according to their habitats, to place
them in captivity by keeping their genetic
purity. Apart from that, it is to be the animal research centre, to provide
information and education facility about animals as well as to acknowledging
the importance of loving and conserving them. With these missions, it is to
hope that GLZoo is not only to become an eco-friendly recreational place that
is creative, fun and educative, but also to provide the green lungs of the city
and water reserves in the city of Yogyakarta.
It is required to know
that the current YGL management is the second generation from Gembira Loka Zoo
founder, Ngarsa Dalem Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Sri Paduka KGPAA Paku
Alam VIII assisted by Tirtowinoto who held a fundamental role in developing
Gembira Loka in regards not only to the ideas, but also its finance and
material for the sake of Gembira Loka Zoo’s improvement.
